East side, west side... all around the... vineyard...
August... the leaves have been pulled off the fruit zone... thousands of them. You can see in these top two photos how the canes have been stripped and what's left on the ground. Leaves are only stripped on the east side of the row; if you stripped leaves on the west side the grapes are subject to sunburn.
Wayward shoots have been tucked into the trellis and tied up. Ron continues to hedge, the vineyard manicure (which I call the "vinecure"), establishing rows with absolutely no shoots hanging down. His suspenders are off his right shoulder to allow free arm movement with the hedging knife, a 24 inch very sharp blade.
Veraison has begun (the grapes turning color) throughout the vineyard. Fruit set was excellent, and we're expecting a very nice vintage. There will be two to three passes through the vineyard to drop crop, ensuring that we get great quality at harvest time.
