We just got our 2011 quote for our custom tin capsules and stock capsules. After reviewing it, we have to wonder what the costume for the tin man in the Wizard of Oz (1939) would cost today! The expression on his face is similar to how we felt when we got the 2011 quote.
I fished out data from Ramondin Capsules from 2006 to 2010. (2001-2005 is upstairs in our attic). Our custom capsules come from Spain, with our logo on the top in gold and "Kinkead Ridge" and a stripe as side decor. Volume is important; they prefer orders of 25,000 but since we are small we order 10,000 capsules at a time. Here's a historical view of the price increases.
Custom capsules:
2006 $144/1000
2007 $152/1000
2009 $187/1000
2010 $206/1000
And now in 2011 we are looking at a whopping $318/1000!
Stock capsules (plain colors) have had similar jumps in price. Cork, bottle and label prices have also increased. We are holding wine prices under $20 for 2011, and we hope everyone appreciates that, but these increases certainly impact the bottom line. There are many wineries in Ohio selling their wines in the $35 and up price point... which Gary Vaynerchuk (winelibrarytv.com) thought was outrageous when he reviewed red and white Ohio wines. He pretty much eviscerated wines at that price point, even if the wines were acceptable.
