We had a wild wind storm last night that knocked out the power around 8 p.m. I woke up at 6.15, ready to leave for the taping of a TV cable show, "Love in the Kitchen" with my favorite Cincinnati foodie, Rita Heikenfeld. The power was still out. Enough hot water for a shower, but no hairdryer! Or Krups coffee pot! Got out the French press! I stopped twice on the way into town, hairdryer in tow, hoping to blow dry my wet hair; McDonalds and a gas station. Neither had an electrical outlet in the bathroom!
We talked about the history of the Ohio wine industry, my move with Ron from his pinot noir vineyard in Oregon, what is an estate vineyard, how wine is made, the history and role of wine yeast, how to choose wine glasses, how to hold them, among other topics.
Rita and I had a wonderful time; Rita made a pork tenderloin rubbed with a dry spice mixture, with a cherry sauce, cabernet franc drizzle, molded rice pilaf and spinach drizzled with olive oil... served with 2008 Cab Franc, the Jefferson Cup winner. A little PS, the pork council has now advised that pork, since it is leaner now, only needs to be cooked to an internal temperature of 145. Pink is fine!
Also linguine with shrimp, lemon zest, herbs from Rita's garden, parmesan, lemon juice, parsley, chives, red pepper flakes, paired with the 2010 Viognier/Roussanne, my favorite of our wines. Its creamy character was fabulous with the dish.
And lemon compote with fresh blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries and our sweet Traminette, a child of Gewurztraminer.
I love my apron. "Sophisticated, Seductive, Complex and Full-Bodied. And the wine's not bad either!"
The very interesting fact about Rita is that I met her because we bought our farm on which we planted the vineyard from her sister and brother-in-law, Bill and Christina Lawson.
